International Exchange

Since the establishment of IEM, various forms of the scientific exchanges and bilateral or multi-lateral cooperate have been carried out with more than 30 countries/regions over the world. Through these activities, IEM has enjoyed very much the friendly relations with and benefited a lot from other countries and also made its own contributions to promote the development of earthquake engineering.

In 1978, Professor George W. Housner, often considered the father of earthquake engineering, led a U.S. Earthquake Engineering Delegation to IEM for a week. In 1979, China and the United States discussed an agreement on cooperation in earthquake science and technology, which was officially signed and entered into force in Beijing in 1980, initiating official China-US cooperation in earthquake science and technology. Annex III of the cooperation agreement, "Research on Earthquake Engineering and Earthquake Disaster Mitigation", was discussed at IEM and drafted by the then Director Liu Huixian.

Exchange and cooperation are essential approaches to improve the academic level and international reputation IEM has wide connections with foreign institutions and universities.
