Graduate Education

The institute is one of the earliest institutions approved by the Academic Degree office of the State Council to train Ph.D. and Master degree students as well as one of the earliest postgraduate training bases. The gift of PhD covers one A-class (science) discipline of civil engineering, the gift of master degree covers the three A-class (science) disciplines of civil engineering, mechanics, and instrument science & technology.

In order to better train the professional personnel and to meet the state’s requirements in setting up specialized subjects, the B-class disciplines of structural engineering, municipal engineering, bridge and tunnel engineering, geotechnical engineering, disaster prevention and reduction engineering and protective engineering were set up under the A-class discipline of civil engineering, and the B-class  disciplines of solid mechanics and engineering mechanics were set up under the A-class discipline of mechanics. Also, to provide conditions for innovative study, the institute also set up post-doctor mobile research stations to meet the study need of the above mentioned disciplines.

The institute has 103 graduate training supervisors, including 42 doctoral supervisors, and 61 master’s supervisors. Each year, about 70 master candidates are recruited by the recommendation of colleges and universities and by the national uniform examinations, and about 30 doctor candidates are recruited by the master-doctor package program and by the national uniform examinations.

At present, the institute has 22 post-doctor staff and 262 postgraduates, among which 99 are doctoral candidates and 163 are master candidates. Since 1978 there have been nearly 1000 graduates obtained their degrees, and 210 of which are doctoral degrees.
