RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING

The Institute of Engineering Mechanics (IEM) of the China Earthquake Administration cordially invites applications from the international earthquake engineering research community to join in the 121 professors/researchers and 500 Ph.D./M.S. Candidates carrying out studies on earthquake hazard mitigation and disaster reduction in China.

Positions Available:

1. Full-time Associate Professors/Assistant Professors

2. Part-time Professors/Associate Professors/Assistant Professors

Salary: Commensurate with Qualifications

Description:

The Institute of Engineering Mechanics (IEM), China Earthquake Administration, formerly known as the Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Chinese Academy of Sciences, established in 1954, is one of the national non-profit commonwealth research institutes in China. IEM is located in Harbin, China, and includes the Zhongguancun campus in Beijng and the Beijing campus (the experimental base) of IEM in Yanjiao, Hebei province, near Beijing.

The main earthquake engineering research fields of IEM include:

●Strong seismic observation and application

●Engineering seismology

●Structural engineering

●Lifeline earthquake engineering

●Rock and soil earthquake engineering

●Seismic risk zoning and prevention

●Earthquake engineering experimental technology

●Engineering vibration measurement technology, etc.

IEM actively engages in international academic exchange and cooperation, and has established effective cooperative relationships with universities and research institutions in over 30 countries and regions. IEM’s library also cooperates with famous universities and research organizations worldwide. Currently, the library has approximately 60,000 books and subscriptions to over 100 magazines, E-journals, and databases. IEM publishes 4 journals (1 in English and 3 in Chinese) in the field of earthquake engineering, civil engineering, and natural disaster, thus making a significant contribution to the spread of scientific knowledge, ideas, and practices. The English journal, Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration has been indexed in Science Citation Index (SCI), Engineering Index (EI), and SCOPUS, among others.

The Earthquake Engineering Experimental Center (EEEC) is currently the most comprehensive large-scale seismic engineering laboratory in China, consisting of four sections: Structural Laboratory, Seismic Simulation Laboratory (Shaking Table Array), Centrifuge Laboratory, and Geodynamics Laboratory. The EEEC is equipped with world-class experimental facilities aimed at improving the safety and resilience of civil engineering and urban communities, such as: 1) an array of three shaking tables with platforms of 5 m*5 m, 3.5 m*3.5 m and 3.5 m*3.5 m, 2) a 5.5 m-radius dynamic centrifuge with a shaking table of 1500 kg payload, 3) a pseudo-dynamic testing system with a 6DOF boundary loading devices, 4) a large scale metrological verification platform of seismic mitigation and isolation devices, 5) nonstructural element earthquake response simulators; and 6) various micro observation and material testing apparatus.

The research budget of IEM is approximately 60 million RMB per year; about 13 million RMB is the IEM Director’s Fund, which is self-arranged by IEM.

IEM is one of the earliest institutions in China conferring doctoral degrees and educating postdoctoral fellows. Currently, IEM offers doctoral program in civil engineering for first-level disciplines, as well as master's programs in civil engineering, instrument science and technology, and mechanics, and a postdoctoral research station for civil engineering is available. Approximately 30 doctoral students, 120 master's students, and several postdoctoral fellows are recruited annually.
