International Cooperation

Introduction

The Institute of Engineering Mechanics (IEM), China Earthquake Administration, formerly the Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was established in 1954. From last ‘60s, IEM began to focus its research activities on the area of earthquake engineering, and thus became the pioneer research institution on earthquake engineering in China. In 1981, IEM took the lead in the establishment of Commission for Earthquake Seismology, Seismological Society of China. IEM has been the host of the secretariat of Chinese Association of Earthquake Engineering (CAEE). The directors and deputy directors always serve as the national delegate of China in IAEE. Many professors from IEM served as director or vice president of IAEE. In 2004, IEM and other 6 earthquake research centers (PEER, MCEER, MAE, DPRI, KEERC and NCREE) initiated to establish the ‘Asian-Pacific Network of Centers for Earthquake Engineering Research’ (ANCER). The current secretary-general is Prof. QI Xiaozhai, the previous director of IEM, and the president is Prof. Sun Baitao, the director of IEM.

From 1978, when the Chinese Government made its policy of opening to the outside world, IEM has achieved a worldwide cooperation program for scientific exchange and joined research. Since then various forms of scientific exchange and bilateral or multi-lateral cooperation have been conducted with many countries and regions in the world, such as Poland, Russia, United States, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Mexico, Yugoslavia, India, Albania, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Algeria, Italy, France, Germany, Greece, Korea, Austria, Portugal, Morocco, Swiss, Iran, Australia, Spain, Macedonia, China Hong Kong and China Taiwan, etc. Long term and close relations have now been established between IEM and tens of universities, research institutes and private enterprises in more than ten countries and regions. A number of mutual-interesting cooperative research projects have been performed between IEM and foreign institutes and universities. Delegations and a large number of individual scientists from many countries and staffs abroad have been invited to be visiting scholars or participants in international conferences, either to present their lectures, or to conduct cooperative research projects. In addition, IEM has organized or co-organized a number of international workshops / seminars in China and abroad. Through these activates, IEM has enjoyed friendly relationships with and benefited from other countries and regions a lot, as well as made its own contributions in promoting and developing the knowledge of earthquake engineering and safety engineering.
