The Journal of Natural Disasters was established in 1992, bimonthly, co-sponsored by the Institute of Engineering Mechanics (IEM), China Earthquake Administration and the China Association for Disaster Prevention. The journal is devoted to reflecting high-level research achievements of disaster science, with the focus on the results of innovative, frontier, comprehensive and guiding research related to natural disasters so as to promote the formation and development of disaster science in China. The journal aims to promote the academic exchanges and serve the facilities of disaster prevention and reduction in China.

The Journal of Natural Disasters is one of the few natural disaster journals with a long-standing reputation in disaster science community of China, attracting the attention of readers around the world, and has a wide range of influences in disaster science. The journal is selected into the T1 level in the safety scientific field of high quality scientific and technological journals by China Association for Science and Technology.

The following is a list of some subject areas describing the scope of the journal, but not limited to: hazard analysis of disasters, prediction of disasters, risk assessment of disasters, disaster prevention, agricultural disaster reduction, meteorological disaster reduction, natural disaster emergency response and public safety, disaster prevention and reduction system engineering, multi disaster coupling and disaster chain, social factors of natural disasters, intelligent disaster prevention and reduction.
